A simple layering trick that keeps your neck and chest warm while breastfeeding. No, it’s not a buttoned cardigan and it’s definitely not special nursing clothing.
It’s an accessory most people wouldn’t even think of… but it can make a huge difference, especially if you’re a mom who gets cold easily.
Night feeds have a very specific problem: the moment you open your pajama to breastfeed, your neck and upper chest get cold instantly.

So how can you stay warm while breastfeeding, specially at night?
A simple solution that’s rarely talked about is using a detachable turtleneck.

It’s basically a “fake” turtleneck that you can add without changing your clothes. You can keep your usual pajamas or nightgown, and just wear it on colder nights.
What makes it especially practical at night:
it keeps your neck and chest warm while feeding
it doesn’t get in the way
and if you feel too warm, you can take it off in seconds
No one really talks about this hack, and it’s incredibly simple. But it’s exactly the kind of flexible solution breastfeeding moms need - no extra outfits, no complicated layers.

What to look for when buying one
If you’re thinking of trying it, a few small details make a big difference:
Material matters: go for cotton or merino wool. Both keep you warm without overheating and help regulate temperature.
It doesn’t need to be thick: a thin, soft fabric works perfectly (like the lightweight merino pieces from Dilling). You want warmth without bulk.
A bit of stretch: look for cotton with elastane, so it’s easy to put on and take off, especially in the middle of the night.
Comfort around the neck: if you’re sensitive to tight turtlenecks, go for a mock neck or mid-height version instead of a high one. It feels less restrictive, and much more comfortable at night.
Front and back coverage: the front should be long enough to keep you warm, but still short enough to allow you to open your pajama and breastfeed comfortably without extra fabric in the way.
If you’re wondering which one to get, this is the one that worked for me:
I personally tried a few and found one where the fabric and texture felt just right. The front and back coverage also worked really well for me, warm enough, but still practical for breastfeeding.
That said, it’s worth trying different ones to see what feels best for you.
If you liked this idea, share it with a mom friend. I’m pretty sure she’ll thank you for it ;)
